You should only use the coarse focus knob on low power (use it first then use the fine to get a sharp image for your eyes), when you increase the power you only adjust the fine focus knob (Do not touch the coarse one)

The coarse focus knob moves the lens quickly but without much accuracy. The fine focus knob on the other hand moves the lens slowly so you can get a nice fine adjustment of the image for clarity. This is most important at high magnifications since the main lens is very close to the object being viewed, and only very small movements will allow you to get a good sharp image.

on the coarse focus knob, you get a slightly blurry image while on the fine focus you get a clear and sharp image of your specimen.

The fine focus knob is for finer focus adjustments, thus the name "fine focus knob."

You use your coarse knob to get as close to in-focus as you can, then use the fine knob to clear up the image better.
