What spider is an orange-ish red color with black and white striped legs, has a huge yellow bubble shaped back with black spots? It was not a small spider either. It was the biggest one I've ever seen. It was found in the woods of Wisconsin across the Mississippi from Red Wing, Minnesota.

This is likely a garden orb weaver, and possibly a longjawed

orb weaver, or even a golden silk orb weaver.

The latter, I have seen larger than my hand.

here are some flavors:

It doesn't sound like a tarantula. At least not the ones we get around here in New Mexico. Those spiders are usually solid black.

Sounds like some variety of orb weaver spider. Do an image search of Google and see what they look like. Very common, and in a good year sometimes they get really big.
