A small bucket/pail will hold around 8 liters. A large bucket of the kind you can pick up at a home improvement store will hold closer to 20 liters. A typical mop bucket will be somewhere between.

There is no specific capacity, since the size of bucket varies. A simple and practical way is to fill the bucket with a water bottle of 1 litre and check how many bottles it takes to fill the bucket. That no. of litres is the capacity of the bucket.

Try filling up a bucket with water and measure how much it weighs in kilograms (must be in kilograms!) and call this M. Then weigh the bucket without any water in it (again in kilograms) and call this m.

Then simply use the equation M-m = V, the volume in litres.

This because the density of water is 1 kg/litre.

(Another thing you could do is grab a bucket and a ruler, measure the depth of the bucket, x, and the diameter, d, of a bucket (both in centimeters!) and use the equation xπd²/4000 = V in litres).

About 3.78 times the buckets capacity in gallons.
