The biggest use of holograms now is for secure documents and labels to help stop counterfiting. Like the ones on Credit cards. Holographic data storage is sure to be the next big use.

It is currently impossible to to create a "Princess Leia hologram" like we see in the movies. Actually, there will brobally never be holograms like that due to a limitation in the technology, though I'm sure some other technology will some day recreate the effect. It is also curren't impossible to create a fully dynamic hologram as seen in movies as well. And scientiest still aren't sure if it will ever be possible. That's why all holograms today are of static(non-moving) objects, though it is possible to get some movement/animation using some tricks but not much. If you see anything fully animated climing to be a hologram then chances are, it's not and your being lied to. For example, the CNN Hologram, the Sega Hologram Arcade game, etc...all fake.

well you can use them to make up Three Dimensional renderings to identify a murder victim, also can use them while designing a car to look at all the aerodynamics and figure out what needs to be changed.
