Something called ionic bonding occurs, when one covalent electron in sodium is given to the atom in the chlorine atom. The two ions are now bonded, hence the name ionic bonding.

All of the electrons are still there, but Na loses one electron to Cl. This creates an octet for each atom, making it stable.
