Because we're in the 21st Century AFTER the birth of Christ.
0-100AD was the first century, 101-200 was the second century, and so on.

We use an agreed upon calender, we being the European and Decendants of Europeans, that is called the Gregorian Calendar.Peoples use to use the Julian Calender, but with 355 Days and no Leap Year it was found to be to complicated.
The Gregorian Calender Also had faults and has been altered at various times to correct.
The 20th Century is the span of years from 1900-2000, see? 20th Century, and now we are in the span, 2000-2100, so this is the 21rst Centrury.
Use to confuse the heck outta me also.

The next century would allways be used. For example 1900s was considerd 20th century because that was what century we we ending on. we are on the 21st because in about 94 years we will be in the 21 century after christ was born.

Years 0 - 100 = 1st century. 100 - 200 = 2nd century. And so on. Therefore, 2000 - 2100 = 21st century.

for the same reason that you are not one year older even though you lived that first year you do not count it.
