i'm just looking to find a reasonable/scientific explanation behind while they do work... i've only ever used them to find underground pipes (i've never tried using them for their alleged supernatural purposes)

also i'm not looking for information about 'cold reads' and only acknowledging success in my findings not failures... i know similar questions have been on here but none of them were ever answered

There is no scientific evidence of their efficacy.

Divining rods do not work. There is no real scientific explanation about how they work, but there is pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo that con men use. One, in Houston, I worked near the home of a Gypsy fortuneteller. She asked me if I'd like a horoscope done. I am atrained astrologer, so I wanted to see what she said, but she did not mention that any more. she just did a cold reading with some such malarkey as, "I see you know a man named Bill..." Don't we all in the USA? I suppose some gullible people would be impressed, but I am too smart for that. Her final game was to say she needed to burn some holy candles for me. Price was $95. I told her I could buy some birthday candles for a few cents that would be as effective as her so-called "holy candles" and left. She had a new car and a maid, so some suckers fell for her cold readings that built up to the candles scam.

Before discussing why divining rods work, it must first be reasonably established that they actually do work. Even among the general population, the efficacy of divining rods is controversial, to say the least. The consensus among scientists and engineers is that they don't work. Almost all commercial locators of underground pipes use electromagnetic metal detectors and other methods that do not depend on divination.

It's very simple. They don't. You can't find anything with them, including water. However, since most of the ground has water under it, it's very easy to fool yourself into thinking it actually does work. But it doesn't. Even finding pipes would be considered supernatural.

They don't work.
