What is that buzzing noise you hear sometimes in the summer?

Yes, it starts low then increases to a high pitch, then seems to putter out. I usually hear it in suburban areas. I always thought it was something related to electrical transformers. Others think it might be an insect. Any definitive answers?

I know that cicadas (si-kay-dahs) make that noise. It is an insect.

It's an insect known as the Cicada. I've seen them and watched them do their stuff. Very interesting critter. They look like a giant green fly about 3 to 4 inches long and the noise is odd in it's ability to carry for very long distances while not being particularly loud.

My 16 year old hears buzzing all the time and the doc said it could be from listening to headphones or loud music, in his case it is permanent. if it is only sometimes, see if there are electrical wires over head they buzz more in rain or such weather.

I have always believed it to be cicadas also known by some people as jar fies.

its a cicada. it is a bug. have you ever seen the shell of a but stuck on a tree? it looks almost alien. The shell is left after they molt.

it is a cicada. it rubs its legs together to make that noise. probably looking for another cicada...
