Advantages:

Solar power helps to slow/stop global warming.

Solar power saves society billions or trillions of dollars.

Solar power saves you money.

Solar power provides energy reliability.

Solar power provides energy security.

Solar power provides energy independence.

Solar power creates jobs.

Disadvantages:

Solar power disadvantages are actually not so plentiful. In fact, there’s only one notable disadvantage to solar power that I can think of. That disadvantage is that the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours a day. When the sun goes down or is heavily shaded, solar PV panels stop producing electricity. If we need electricity at that time, we have to get it from some other source. In other words, we couldn’t be 100% powered by solar panels. At the very least, we need batteries to store electricity produced by solar panels for use sometime later.

Solar is one of the best alternative energy sources and the photovoltaic cells (solar cells) on the panels continue to be re-engineered to provide substantially larger yields with smaller surface area. It is a promising alternative, but there are some disadvantages, some of which have already been addressed but others that haven't. Many solar farms (currently) require a vast amount of land space to provide enough electricity to support a small town. There have been many solar projects that have been canceled in the desert around Arizona and Southern California that would have compromised many species habitats as well has fence off large parcels of national park land from the public. Therefore, in terms of the 'end all' alternative energy source, it isn't. But so far it is one of the more promising. So in summary: Advantages: 1)One of the best alternative energy technologies currently available and its getting cheaper (tax rebates) 2) Uses an unlimited energy resource (the sun) 3) Increasing engineering and rethinking is leading to smaller, cheaper, more efficient solar panels. Disadvantages: 1) Only work at day (unless you have a generator, which stores the electricity, which is pretty much required for solar installation nowadays) 2) Currently requires a lot of land use for the amount of electricity needed for our big cities to run solely on solar 3) Over-estimated as the 'end all' alternative (We're gonna need more than one alternative to replace coal, nuclear, and oil).

Thanks for this Robort. Very informative, even without a question as such...

Hopefully it won't be seen as phishing or spam!
