Newton's First Law describes inertia. Inertia is the tendency of an object to stay at the same place or continue moving in the same direction and with same speed until an external force is acted upon it.

The law states that an object tends to stay at rest or keep moving in same direction and speed until an external unbalanced force acts upon it.

An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
